The Greeks more especially affected to muffle up their Ethicks in Fables, Allegories, and Emblems. Particularly Pythagoras and his followers were much pleas'd with Numbers and Symbols. And in a word, all the Ancient way of Moralizing was by Symbolical Representations, Parables and Mysteries. But the Apostle lets us know, that these Abstruse modes of Instruction are seldom used under the Gospel, that Christianity is a Mystery of another kind and way.
