For the word Keys being a metaphorical Expression, is frequently us'd in the Holy Scripture to signifie that Superiority or Supreme Power with which a Person is invested to Govern a Family, a City, or a Kingdom; and therefore when a City is surrendred, 'tis the usual Custom to deliver up the Keys to the Prince, or Principal Person, in acknowledgment of his Power, and as a sign of Subjection to it.
