For absolution and reconciliation of penitents I need say no more, but the question of S. Austin, Quid est aliud Manûs Impositio, quàm oratio super hominem? And the Priestly absolution is called by S. Leo, Sacerdotum supplicationes, The prayers of Priests; and in the old Ordo Romanus, and in the Pontifical, the forms of reconciliation were [ Deus te absolvat ] the Lord pardon thee, &c. But whatsoever the forms were (for they may be optative, or indicative, or declarative,) the case is not altered as to this question: |
