In the very story of which this Text is a part, God certainly might have inriched Jacob by what means he pleased, conducted him home to his Country upon that one score of his free mercy, (as well as he may bring his chosen to Heaven merely by acts of free Grace) but you see, he chuses to do it on that other style, as he is the God of Bethel, that ever since the mutual compact betwixt him and Jacob there, hath stood obliged to this poor Syrian, and must deny himself if he be not constant to Jacob.
