If Christ himself had not been tempted with all the Kingdoms of the Earth, and the Glory of them, yea and afterwards too with Disgrace, and Torment, and Death it self, How then could he have led Captivity Captive? but for Injuries, and Pains, where were our Fortitude, and Patience? were it not for all sorts of forbidden Fruit, where were Continence, and Sobriety, and all other Abstinencies from Evil? were it not for Wealth and Plenty, where were Munificence, and Works of Mercy? where the Victories of Meekness, and Moderation, if there were no such thing as Glory, and worldly Greatness?
