Why, sayes he, God hath revealed them to us by his Spirit, v. 10. who is therefore given to believers, that they may know the things that are freely given them of God, v. 12. and among other things they come to know the love of Christ, and to know it more abundantly by the Spirit: for, sayes the same Apostle, The love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost, which is given to us, Rom. 5.5. The first sight, and further tastes of the love of God in Christ, is from the Holy Ghost. Now as the gift of the Spirit is in it self a great gift of love, and indeed next to the gift of Christ the greatest, (the Evangelist makes it equivalent to all good things, Luke 11.13. compared with Mat. 7.11.) so it argues the love of Christ to be exceeding great, that the glorious Spirit of God is given on purpose to bring us to acquaintance with it.
