My House shall be called, &c. The Thing here spoken of is Gods House, described 1. By its Appropriation unto him, it is his peculiar, My House. 2. By its extent of receipt in respect of others, it is for all People. 3. By the employment of its Inhabitants, that is Prayer, it shall be called an House of Prayer.

Ye are built upon the Foundation of the Prophets, and the Apostles, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone, in whom the whole building fitly framed together, groweth into an holy Temple in the Lord:

To make this the more evident, I shall do these two things: 1. Shew you what are the chief Properties of this House. 2. Declare what is the Relation, wherein Jesus Christ stands to this House, having called it all along the Church of Christ.

The Ark in the Tabernacle, and afterwards in the Temple, was the most holy thing, in the most holy Place. There was nothing in it but the two Tables of stone written with the Finger of God:
